There are lots of deer - your just about guaranteed to see does and fawns - but the ‘goal’ is the get the Big Buck, and every hunting map probably has a handful of bucks and only one trophy caliber animal. It seems that perhaps this is part of the game as well, since some locations seem devoid of deer and others are more successful.
Deer have believable behaviors, such as bedding down in the daytime, and have nice animations, although i can’t tell yet if they have true “patterns” or if they just spawn and wander around randomly. There are feeders, tree stands, ATV’s, bait and calls, a few basic weapon types but several combinations of caliber and scope available. I miss having to walk in the dark - all hunting starts at 6 am and ends at 6 pm. There is some work to do with sighting in your weapon of choice. The trees are nice, the grasses are especially nice, the ambient sounds are acceptable.

Choose 5 Strength and 5 Weapon and 0 Stealth and Presence, and you’ve made a pot-bellied ex-military crack shot that will never even see a deer at less than 200 yrds away as every living thing runs from him far before he sees them. Selecting 5 points each of Presence (which is i suppose something like presence of mind, very necessary to stop fidgiting over hours of stitting in a blind) and 5 of Stealth, and i can almost touch a deer lurking around, and it really feels like its how i am normally.
Normally im a very self controlled, quiet hunter whom has been approached several times by animals (including an Elk, which was cool) within mere feet if not inches. I know its bland and utterly uninteresting to any well-played gamer, but its effect within the game are quite impressive and well approximate reality. The most innovative is the RPG like element of choosing your hunters skills. I’ve been hunting many times, and this is the first time in a game where i actually feel the virtual experience approximates the real. Its not terrible at all.īasically what makes it nice is that the designers have actually hunted, have studied the typical characteristics of deer and hunting, and put them into a game. Forgive my degeneracy into Super Walmarterism, but i’ve been playing the Deer Hunter 2005 demo for the last couple hours, and have been having enough fun to discourage me from doing any other gaming.
